Conservatives will always stand up for law-abiding firearms owners. Instead of confiscating their lawful property, we support common-sense policies that keep guns out of the hands of dangerous criminals.

The Liberals are constantly going after law-abiding firearms owners in order to score political points. It's non-sensical and unjustified. Police associations have been vocal in stating that the Liberal firearms bans don’t work. For example, the President of the Toronto Police Association recently said, “[a] few weeks ago, we had upwards of 100 rounds fired where 16 firearms were seized, all of which were unlawful. The gun bans are clearly not working”

We will simplify firearm classification rules using clear, plain language based on the empirical qualities of each firearm. In other words, firearms should be classified based on what they do, not how they look.

We consult firearm experts, made up of farmers, sport shooters, First Nations, hunters, frontline law enforcement, and technical experts like gun collectors. Their mission will be to define clear, simple criteria for classifying firearms.

The Liberals have failed to fix the border disorder that lets in almost all of the illegal firearms used in gun crimes, and in the last 9 years, gun-related crime is up 116%. Violent gun crime is on the rise because of a catch-and-release bail system they created with Bill C-75, but also because Liberals have reduced penalties for at least 9 gun crimes through Bill C-5:

• Using a firearm or imitation firearm in commission of an offence

• Possession of firearm or weapon knowing its possession is unauthorized

• Possession of prohibited or restricted firearm with ammunition

• Possession of weapon obtained by commission of offence

• Importing and Exporting knowing it is unauthorized

• Discharging firearm with intent

• Discharging firearm — recklessness

• Robbery with a firearm

• Extortion with a firearm

Conservatives will strengthen law enforcement to go after the real criminals, including introducing five-year mandatory minimum sentences for serious offenses like deliberately causing bodily harm, gun smuggling, and the illegal trafficking of firearms.
