Free Speech
Prime Minister Sir Wilfrid Laurier—a Liberal—once said that “Canada is free, and freedom is our nationality.” Liberals no longer speak in such terms, having spent the last nine years undermining the principles of free speech.
The Liberals first put forward Bill C-11 – the Online Streaming Act – to give themselves the power to control what Canadians see and say online. Even worse, they recently attempted to ram through Bill C-63, the Online Harms Act.
This legislation proposed creating a Digital Safety Commission with sweeping powers to regulate what Canadians do online. It also introduced the concept of peace bonds, essentially a mechanism to pre-emptively punish individuals based on mere suspicion of future hate speech. Perhaps worst of all, the legislation sought to reintroduce section 13 of the Canadian Human Rights Act, which addressed speech but was previously removed over a decade ago due to constitutional concerns.
Liberals have a proven track record of undermining freedom of speech. You deserve a government that will fight to protect this bedrock of our democratic system, and only Conservatives will do so.
